USAID funded ARREST program partner ENV (Education for Nature-Vietnam) sent out 547 colorful postcards to bear farmers throughout Vietnam warning them of the penalties for illegally exploiting captive bears. The postcard, which was illustrated by a child, depicts farmers being arrested by police and warns the public of the strong penalties for wildlife crime involving bears in Vietnam. The farms are very popular tourist attractions, especially for visiting Chinese and Koreans who use the bears extracted bile for traditional medicine applications. Many involved are unaware of the stiff penalties concerning the illegal exploitation of the bears, up to 7 years jail time and/or fines up US$ 24,000. With the postcards reaching many in rural areas who might not be exposed to other campaigns, the awareness created will help the plight of these captive, highly exploited bears.
