Based on investigations by FREELAND and ARREST-trained officers, the International Herald Tribune (IHT) published a front page article on a major wildlife syndicate led by Laos PDR national Vixay Keosavang. Shortly after, three corrupt Thai police officers were arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport for smuggling rhino horns destined for the syndicate . Police Major General Norasak Hemnithi acknowledged the information provided by FREELAND in a press conference. Police also issued a warrant for the arrest of one of the kingpin’s deputies. Keosavang is the head of a multi-million dollar syndicate stretching from Africa to Asia. Last year, Keosavang’s lead deputy, Chumlong Lemthongthai, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for smuggling rhino horns from South Africa destined for the syndicate. The article was published in the New York Times and International Herald Tribune reaching more than 1.5 million people in 160 countries.
