Cambodia’s mobile wildlife crime task force conducted a pair of operations which rescued two sun bears and a number of tortoises. The team, supported by ARREST Partner Wildlife Alliance in co-operation with Free the Bears and Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center, rescued two Sun Bears from the Yung Wah Garment Factory located in Kandal Province which were abandoned by the factory’s owners. The two bears, one juvenile female and one adult male, were severely malnourished. It is hoped that after a lengthy rehabilitation process the bears will be released into a protected natural environment. The team also seized 130 tortoises being smuggled in plastic bags on a bus from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. Wildlife Alliance released all tortoises on February 16 into its wildlife sanctuary in Cambodia’s Southern Cardamom Mountains. The Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team is the ASEAN-WEN ‘s Task Force in Cambodia made up of members who have been trained using ARREST’s DETECT training in 2011.
